Umbel & Panicle was inspired by the love of plants and all things botanical. From seed to sapling to flower and to fruit, plants have always been a fascination for many people. Their beauty is both fragile and tough, the curl of a green tendril across a wire fence, the dandelion sprouting bravely from a crack in the concrete pavement. Their cyclical patterns are the rhythms of nature, the breathing of the Earth. When we feel stressed, we often want to ground to the earth, just like a tree sending its roots into soil. Plants, like us, have social networks too. They talk to each other and send off signals to attract or repel insects.
This bi-monthly lit journal will be a collection of speculative poetry and photography inspired by plants. There will be themes centered around plants, parts of plants, or botanical terms found in textbooks. The poems will be plant-based: thoughts, musings and observations with the theme as a seed.
Umbel & Panicle is also run by volunteers. Poets and photographers may choose to submit and tip. Perhaps, in the future, we can find a concrete way to pay poets and photographers. We will grow slowly but surely... like a plant.
We want submissions from poets and photographers of marginalized groups. Remember: don't self-reject! We look forward to reading and seeing your poems and photographs!
